“We moved to Portland, specifically to Holladay Park Plaza from the Black Hills in western South Dakota, looking for a fun spot to live out the next chapter of our lives.

We had several major criteria for choosing where we would like to spend our retirement years; great transportation, great medical care, great entertainment, fun local adventures.  Holladay Park Plaza met our criteria and then some!

Our selection of Holladay Park Plaza was not a real chore.  We had done research on what to expect from a variety of different models of retirement communities, and settled on a continuing care community model.  We were in contact with a great long-time friend who, like us was looking for good places to join in retirement.  After visiting with our friend several times, getting local recommendations and visiting HPP over some time, we liked the welcoming culture of the residents and staff, and found that the location of HPP offered all of the amenities we were seeking, in a good location, and had retained to vibrant community that we were hoping to find.

We are very happy with our choice, and have found new friends, new activities and have started to weave ourselves into the fabric of the HPP community.  We can’t think of too many places we’d rather be located, except for the trips away to enjoy the Pacific Northwest, and trips around Portland and the Willamette Valley.  Seems like plenty of opportunities to keep our curious minds, helpful hands, and wandering feet busy.”

"As a resident of Holladay Park Plaza for almost ten years, I can say with confidence that living here is one of the best decisions I have ever made. The opportunities for engaging with bright, service-minded retired professionals are endless. I also deeply appreciate the responsive and effective leadership that the HPP administration provides in keeping us safe and in ensuring residents have attractive common areas. The menu of fitness and social activities is extraordinary."

“My husband, Ken, and I came to Holladay Park Plaza in December of 2012. It was a dream we’d had for four years since we took our first tour in 2008. We had previously lived in a three-level town house that we loved but found increasingly challenging to maintain. We were very ready to downsize and move closer to downtown Portland. The move was an easy one [after the usual tasks of downsizing and packing and unpacking]. Not only did we love our thirteenth-floor, three-room apartment with its wonderful view of downtown and the west hills, but we realized we were in the midst of an amazing community of like minded people. Dinners were a delight: making new friends and discovering connections that surprised us. The diversity of residents and staff that we discovered here continues to amaze and delight us. We were quickly swept up into the busy community of committed residents working to make our HPP community and the larger community and world a better place. Ken was quickly recruited to serve on a variety of committees and I, boldly and unthinkingly, agreed to take over the in-house resident newsletter, The Plaza Review. For over thirteen years we’ve thanked ourselves for having had the vision to make the move while we were physically able to enjoy our time here and to also be able to serve the community. HPP has seen many changes during this time. They have experienced personnel changes at every level, maintenance challenges in the upkeep and refurbishment of an old building, and the biggest of all—coping with caring for all of us during the pandemic. Even though we all grumble from time to time, we never doubt that management and staff will serve us well and care for our needs during difficult times. We continue to count ourselves very fortunate to have chosen Holladay Park Plaza.”

Mary and Mary Beth

"We moved to HPP from a townhouse in SE Portland 5 years ago, but we had lived in NE Portland for many years before that. So, you could say that we were just coming home. Initially “Location, location, location” was an influencing factor in choosing HPP—good transportation, a beautiful neighborhood for walking , family and friends close by. We were offered an apartment and fell in love at first sight. Although we had a sense of HPP as a community, we had no idea how deep and rewarding our friendships would become; nor did we realize the wealth of opportunities that awaited us. Each of us has found our own interests and passions to pursue. Mary is putting her organizational skills to good use as the Residents Association President as she she interacts with residents and HPP leadership. Along with a wonderful cadre of volunteers, Mary Beth finds much joy in working in the Healing Garden, which provides a beautiful respite for residents in assisted living and skilled nursing as well as for the staff who work there. And then, there’s the Wednesday Knitting Group that she began. These gals are ambitious knitters. The energy and giving spirit of HPP residents truly inspire us every day."
